Barnabas Foundation celebrates $600 million in charitable gifts distributed on behalf of Christian donors

Barnabas Foundation has reached a significant milestone — assisting with the distribution of $600 million in gifts to charities, since its inception in 1976.

Individuals and families gave these gifts in the form of Wills, trusts, securities, cash, real estate, life insurance and other assets. Barnabas Foundation, in turn, channeled the gifts to a variety of donor-designated charities, including its nearly 200 member ministries.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone on behalf of our ministry partners and the families who support them,” said Jim Bakke, executive director for Barnabas Foundation. “It’s our joy and calling to build God’s kingdom by helping generous Christians give more effectively to the ministries close to their hearts.”

Christians who give through Barnabas Foundation support an assortment of charities that serve their communities and the world through various avenues, services and resources.

Last year, for example, Barnabas Foundation distributed:

  • 35 percent of donors’ charitable gifts to educational institutions;
  • 24 percent to Christian missions and evangelism ministries;
  • 21 percent to churches;
  • 17 percent to relief or human services organizations, and
  • 5 percent to other charities.

Of the $600 million in all-time distributed charitable gifts, $27 million came from planned giving agreements that also provided donors income for life.

Nearly 80 percent of the $600 million distributed had initially been placed in Barnabas Foundation’s Stewards Fund. This donor-advised fund simplifies charitable giving while providing donors with tax benefits. Today, more than $178 million resides in Stewards Fund accounts, available for future distribution to Christian ministries.

Barnabas Foundation advances God’s kingdom by providing tax-wise planned giving, estate planning and stewardship development services to a current membership of 200 Christian organizations, and the individuals and families who support them.
